Where are Carroll Tuli's farming operations based?
We are based between Lichtenburg and Biesiesvlei in the North West province in South Africa.

Is the Tuli cattle breed really a distinct breed?
Absolutely! The Tuli breed is genetically concentrated and different from other cattle breeds based on advanced genomic testing done on the Tuli breed for the last few years. The testing protocol is managed through SA Studbook's genomic testing program in South Africa.

Where can I find more information about the Tuli breed?

Do you only farm with registered Tuli cattle?
We farm with registered and commercial Tuli cattle. We also have other cattle breeds that we use in our cross-bred commercial herds. You will however only find registered Tuli bulls as sires in all our herds.

What information is available about Tuli cattle on sale?
We only sell bulls that have been tested by a veterinarian for relevant fertility and breeding health. We also sell cows that has been either pregnancy checked by a veterinarian or are visually pregnant. We can provide relevant veterinary test results on request. For all registered cattle we also have all the relevant details on EBV's and genetics available on request.

Can cattle that are bought be delivered to a my farm?
Yes, we utilize some of our own transport or contractors to deliver cattle within an acceptable distance from the farm in South Africa.
Transport cost can be quoted separately if needed.

What are your farming practices related to regenerative farming?
We aim to practice as far as possible the following principles:
- Mob grazing with sizable herds and multi-sire breeding
- Rotational grazing to allow appropriate rest for our veld
- Build soil through applying appropriate seasonal grazing strategies and grazing pressure
- Work as much as possible with nature by calving when the grass is green
- Identify and propagate genetics that performs with the lowest carbon derived input

Are your cattle exposed to tick related diseases?
Yes, we farm in moderate to high areas affected by tick related diseases such as galsickness, heartwater and red water. We have sold bulls to customers that are in harsh heartwater and redwater bushveld areas with great feedback on their adaptability and performance.

Do you vaccinate your Tuli cattle against diseases?
Yes, however we follow a minimalist approach through a rigorous seasonal vaccination program that builds herd immunity against major diseases only. We aim to keep track of the animals that require less treatment and continue to propagate their genetics.

What makes your Tuli cattle really veld adapted?
We do not provide supplementary feed to our animals, unless we have a dire drought situation. We only provide minimal phosphate and salt licks based on the season. We have a specific winter lick designed to optimize rumen function and support dry matter intake for mob grazing. Our bulls are not treated differently, as they are either in the female herd busy breeding or in a large bull mob. We do however look after our bulls that go to auction with a bit of love a few weeks before the auction starts, as they need to showcase the best of our efforts and need to represent the Tuli breed well.
